Q&A About Services

Q: How to choose the right PMU (permanent makeup) artist?

PMU can change your life dramatically by giving you the look you've always wanted in a permanent way. Your PMU appointment can be a permanently happy experience and also it can go the other way. We've seen clients with existing PMU work on their eyebrows, eyeliners, and lips they got from unqualified PMU artists and have been mentally broken down for their life. Do your own research when choosing your PMU artist. See the following at the very minimum and ask your PMU artists before you make an appointment. Where did they get certified? Is certifying institute/trainer a reputable PMU business and can be found easily online? Do they have insurance? Do they have good quality portfolio? Do they have enough reviews and can you be a critical in reading those reviews? Do they have current blood-borne pathogen certificate? And simply ask any questions before you make a decision during consultation.

Q: Pre-care Instructions?

The outcome of PMU service can depend on many factors and pre-care is one of them. For example, if you took a blood thinning medicines, caffeine, or alcohol 24 hours before your PMU appointment, you may experience unnecessarily excessive bleeding during the procedure, which may results in less than perfect pigmentation or worst case scenario, your procedure may have to be stopped incomplete. Please make sure you read our pre-care instructions on our PMU Process and Care page.

Q: What is PMU exactly?

PMU stands for Permanent MakeUp and in the PMU industry many terms are coined such as SPMU (semi-permanent makeup), micropigmentation, cosmetic tattoo, etc. They all meant to refer to the same thing and within PMU technologies and service types there are slight variations which terms are more frequently used. For example, within Brow PMU services there are Microblading, Microshading, Combo Brows, Powder Brows, Nano Brows, Bold Brows and they are all different techniques, but overall it's all basically a combination of stroking and shading techniques. The difference is pattern and which device is used. These terms are somewhat commercial (coined by PMU academies around the world) and can be confusing. Experienced PMU artists will understand which technique is from where and what it really means. Keep in mind that PMU is still in a development mode from regulations standpoint and frequently used terms might be different from state to state and country to country. In short, PMU is a cosmetic (sometimes called medical for areola and scalp tattoo) pigmentation technique using a needle-like manual/electric devices to embed select pigments under the skin. The largest difference between body art (aka body tattoo) and PMU is the precise location of pigmentation. PMU procedure embed pigments between epidermis and dermis layer carefully, so it can fade out over time. The misconcept we often encounter during consultation is why PMU is not really "permanent" like body art? Big difference is PMU is mostly for cosmetic purpose and the expression of each thin line or one touch of shading by machine can create a huge impact on how you look. Imagine you have slightly asymmetric brows or eyeliners or lips and they are "permanent". Your life will be devastated. Body art work is still an artwork, but symmetry is not as critical as PMU and they are not done on the face (well, mostly). No one will notice slightly - I mean hair thin - asymmetric triangle in body art, but it's impossible to bring highest level of details in dermis layer. Single stroke or shading is in micrometers (µm) and even though these days body art needles and PMU needles share a lot in common and often interchageably used, PMU's final work quality can depend on a single stroke while body art work's quality may depends on the overall definition more than a single stroke. To be able to create illusional effect giving enough realism in brows, eyeliners, and lips by delicate touch of a single hairline stroke or one pass of shading, it is important to express those with pigments in greater detail. Over a period of time body art work smears slowly. That can be a disaster for brows, eyeliners, and lips, right? Fading naturally without smearing followed by a maintenance touch-up is the right way of cosmetic tattoo.

Q: I have an existing PMU. Can I book your service?

Thank you for considering us for your PMU work. In most cases existing PMU is OK to work with, but there are certain things for us to consider before we take you in for service. If your existing PMU is in acceptable condition, we can definitely provide our PMU service. If your existing PMU is below our PMU standards, there are two options to consider. PMU removal first followed by our PMU service (if removal is possible) Refusal of our service offer (if removal is NOT possible) Rarely there might be some cases where multiple laser tattoo removal is the only reasonable way to remove existing PMU and saline PMU removal would not work. This is when PMU is done deep in the dermis layer of your skin like body art work. Multiple sessions of laser tattoo removal is not only costly and it takes time (each session is scheduled at least couple of weeks apart and it can take 1 - 4 sessions depending on the severity of existing PMU). That's why choosing the right PMU artist is important (Refer to our first FAQ by clicking "How to choose the right PMU artist"). Your PMU can be permanently beautiful or permanently mental-damaging depending on who you choose.

Q: I am pregnant. Can I get PMU?

Congratulations first! Although it's one of the most exciting (and nervous) chapter in your life, it is NOT recommended to get PMU if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant soon. Pregnancy itself alone can have various symptoms to many different people and adding any uncertainties is not a good practice in general. We recommend PMU after giving a birth and breastfeeding if planned.

Q: I am going through chemo therapy. Can I get PMU?

Cancer patients can lose their hairs during treatments and quite often they look for a PMU service to get their hairs back and eyebrows are often the most popular area. Although Microblading and other eyebrow PMUs can help the cancer patients a lot, it is recommended to get PMU after completion of chemo sessions and confirmation of end of chemo treatments first. Similar to pregnancy, cancer itself can have various symptoms and each individual's experience may be different and adding one more variable by getting PMU during the treatment is not recommended.

Q: What is healing and why a touch-up after healing is needed?

In almost all cases, PMU procedure is done in two part. Initial session and touch-up session. Each session is the same from a technical standpoint, but the choice of pigments and devices may or may not change for completion. Initial session: Your first appointment. After consultation you and PMU artist will decide which shape and pattern you'll go with. Pigments of choice will be embedded under your skin using PMU devices. For example, Microblading is done using a pen with a bundle of tiny blades attached to it and PMU artist will intentionally damage your skin to carefully place the pigments into the right place. Healing: Typically 4 - 6 weeks. Since your skin is damaged, your body naturally will try to heal your skin. During this healing period of 4 - 6 weeks, you will experience fading of color, scabbing, itchiness, and re-darkening, which are all normal. Touch-up: Once your skin is fully healed, you'll come back for a touch-up. Your PMU artist now understands much better how your skin is healed and can imagine how your skin will look like when a touch-up is done. During touch-up your shape and color can be corrected if needed. After the touch-up session, you'll go through another healing process, but since the touch-up is not as aggressive as the initial session, the healing is much faster than the first healing.

Q: How long will PMU last?

The retention of PMU can depend on many factors including but not limited to the following - skin type, age, pre-care, aftercare, sleeping habit, makeup routine, shower routine, etc. Typically PMU can last 1 - 2 years. Many of our clients get yearly maintenance touch-up service to maintain the optimal conditions throughout the entire year. Some clients enjoy their PMU for more than 2 years and some come back within 6 months for a maintenance touch-up. It also depends on how perfectly you want to look. Also areas of PMU may have different retention effect. For example, eyeliners are more retentive than lips or brows since they are less exposed to sunlight, less frequently touched by hands. PMU is a low maintenance procedure, so you can skip your daily makeup routine and be ready to go anywhere 24/7. However, it is NOT a maintenance-free procedure. Unlike body tattoo, PMU will gradually fade out since the pigments are embedded just under the surface of your skin between epidermis and dermis layer. Why? Refer to the last two paragraphs of "What is PMU exactly?" section above.

Q: Can I have eyelash extensions and PMU service on the same day?

We get this question a lot and the answer is mostly YES! Eyelash extensions do not involve any direct skin damage or require any specific medicines and they do not have any impact on PMU procedures for lips and brows. Getting eyeliner PMU and eyelash extensions at the same time is not recommended though. The adhesives used during eyelash extensions and the lash lines where PMU is done are too close. Sometimes clients tend to touch eyelashes and lash lines more frequently than usual, which may have an impact on the healing of eyeliner PMU as well as the retention of eyelash extensions. So we recommend getting Eyeliner PMU and eyelash extensions separately with proper interval.

Q: Is everyone eligible for Keratin Lash Lift?

Ideal candidiates for Keratin Lash Lift are someone with thin and long natural lashes. Clients with short and thick natural lashes may be declined for Keratin Lash Lift service since the retention can be relatively short.
